Websites in the Age of Agents
ChatGPT changed the rules—again.
Just when we thought we’d wrapped our heads around copilots and conversational interfaces, OpenAI dropped another bomb: ChatGPT now has autonomous agents.
Quick translation? A new kind of “user” just showed up on the internet. One that can read, execute, decide, compare, and even buy… without clicking a single thing.
This changes everything.
What’s an agent?
It’s a leveled-up version of what we used to call “assistants”: it can browse websites, use tools, pass data between systems, perform actions, plan steps… and do it all for you.
An agent doesn’t “read” like a human. It processes content, detects intent, seeks efficiency. Its focus is on completing tasks, not experiencing visuals.
If your website used to be about convincing a person, now it also needs to be understandable and usable for an intelligence that doesn’t see or feel—but acts.
So, what changes for websites? A lot. And fast. Here are 5 concrete shifts we’re already seeing on the horizon:
1. Your site needs to speak clearly… to machines.
Agents won’t scroll through your homepage, admire your hero, or be swayed by a great photo. They’ll look for the data, the button, the endpoint they need to complete a task. Structure, tags, readable content, clear semantics, precise microcopy— All of that becomes key so your site doesn’t turn into a dead end for an AI.
2. Invisible UX: those with internal APIs and defined flows will win.
The experience is no longer just visual—it’s negotiated between systems. Simple example: If a user tells their agent: “Book a haircut for my dog this Friday at 5PM”, the agent should be able to access your site, find availability, fill out the form, and confirm… without ever showing an interface to anyone.
That’s not science fiction. That’s conversational design + logical structure + available endpoints.
3. SEO is shedding its skin (again).
Google is no longer the only search engine that matters. Now, agents “read” the web directly. If your content isn’t well structured, if your site is a black box, if key data is buried in messy HTML or locked in PDFs… you’re out of the game.
Welcome to SEO for agents. Indexable, actionable, and task-focused—not just content-focused.
4. Websites as datasets: readable, connectable, automatable.
Visuals alone don’t cut it. Your business flows need to be represented logically, structurally, and in reusable formats.
That means:
- Separating content from presentation.
- Using task-oriented information architecture.
- Thinking of your site as both an interface and a source of truth for an AI that might scrape it or make API calls.
5. Those who integrate, win.
Agents will prefer sites where they can complete actions without friction: buy, book, send, download. And that only happens if the site’s logic is well defined and connected. Your integrations and backend now matter more than ever.
So… what now?
At IURCO, we’re already working to prepare our clients’ websites for this new landscape. Not as a hype move, but as a competitive edge.
We’ve launched a new initiative to build agent-friendly websites, focusing on:
- Structural review and optimization for agent consumption
- Designing clear, readable, automatable action flows
- Exposing key data and microinteractions as AI entry points
- Implementing internal endpoints for recurring tasks
- Designing conversational experiences that extend the site’s logic to interfaces like ChatGPT, Siri, or enterprise copilots
